“Although, your health condition may impact your everyday life, do not let it define who you are.” This text presents a comprehensive study of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. It is an excellent source of information for learning and understanding the different aspects of these health conditions. To fully understand, it is not enough that we know only parts of the disease but rather every aspect of it like, descriptions, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, etiology/causes, stages, treatments, risk factors and preventions, latest in research and clinical studies, about caregiving, caregivers, its comparison to similar conditions, and how it was link to other conditions. Advances in research have lead to the development of methods in detecting brain changes at their earliest stages. These efforts are designed to determine who is at highest risk for Alzheimer’s and dementia so that treatments can be tested more rapidly and effectively. Scientists are currently exploring three main approaches to early diagnosis (which are discussed in this text). Scientists are now realizing that many cellular changes occur in the brain during the Alzheimer’s disease process. Amyloid plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, synaptic loss, and cell death are the most striking features of the Alzheimer’s brain when it is viewed under the microscope. Also, glial cells show abnormalities, as certain populations of glial cells begin to swell up and divide to produce more glial cells. The destruction of neurons releasing the neurotransmitter acetylcholine appears to be common among people with dementias. By blocking the enzyme responsible for breaking down acetylcholine, medications designed to inhibit cholinesterase have been found to increase acetylcholine levels in the brain. Likewise, recent drug discoveries mentioned here have shown to produce good outcomes in slowing down disease progression. Also, a specific hormone was recently tested and has shown to promote neurogenesis, reduce brain pathology and improve cognition in Alzheimer’s model mice. More discussion can be read through the treatment and research part of this text. There are several risk factors that can increase a person’s chance of developing one or more kinds of dementia. Some of these factors can be modified, while others cannot. There are a number of studies that suggest ways that may lessen the risk of developing these conditions; among these were discussed in this text. In addition, studies and surveys suggest that certain racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups may be at greater risk than others for cognitive decline and dementia, and that different groups are vulnerable to different risk factors. Also, statistics show that almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s disease affects one gender than the other. Understanding these differences is critical to developing appropriate risk assessments and diagnostic tools and providing the most effective interventions to minimize Alzheimer’s disease risk for everyone. With regards to care, there have been recent developments of collaborative dementia care models, which integrate and deliver medical and psychosocial interventions in a coordinated way for both people with dementia as well as their caregivers. Results of these care models show significant improvement in the quality of dementia care among primary care patients. Thank you and may you all have a good understanding of these health conditions. It is important that we truly understand these health conditions because it is continuously rising worldwide and are now considered as one of the top ten leading cause of death in our time.
